Our tip: You can still switch until November 30th.
It is always surprising how much the prices differ: This year we found 7 Tips you can really save on car insurance this out using full car insurance comprehensive insurance for a four-year-old VW Polo. With an inexpensive provider with good conditions, the insurance for our sample customer only costs 280 euros a year. Most people now know that you should always compare providers. But if you tick the wrong boxes when taking out a policy on the website, it will cost you quite a lot. With just a few unfavorable details, the price can quadruple: In our example, we ended up with a whopping 1,504 euros per year.
That shouldn’t happen to you! You can only find the best price if you compare providers with the right tick boxes for the right features. And then choose the cheapest insurer. With our 7 tips, this is easy:
Tip 1: Keep the circle of drivers small
If you let everyone get behind the wheel, your insurance will be twice as expensive on average as if only you and your partner drive. New drivers in particular drive up the costs. If you want to let your children drive, you should follow these tips. By the way: If someone else drives for once, you still have liability protection. However, you must expect a contractual penalty.
Tip 2: Pay a year in advance
If you pay your premiums month after month, it will cost you more than if you pay a year in advance. 7 Tips you can really save on car insuranceThe providers then waive an average of 9 percent. You won’t get that much interest on any fixed-term deposit in the world!
Tip 3: Don’t enter too many kilometers
Who knows exactly how many kilometers they drive per year? When this question comes up when filling out the comparison portal, some people enter a few thousand kilometers more – just to be on the safe side. The only problem is that this drives up the price: 15,000 kilometers are about 9 percent more expensive than 10,000 kilometers. If you do drive a little more, perhaps because of a vacation to Spain, you can adjust your information afterward. The premium will then be recalculated – you don’t have to worry about a contractual penalty.
Tip 4: No comprehensive insurance without a deductible
If you pay for small damages yourself, you relieve the insurance company of a lot of bureaucracy – and save money in the process. We recommend at least a 300 euro deductible for fully comprehensive insurance and 150 euro for partial comprehensive insurance. The latter reduces the premiums by an average of 18 percent. You can find out here whether fully comprehensive or partial comprehensive insurance is worth it for you.
Tip 5: Think about the workshop commitment
The fifth feature that we checked in our calculation example was the workshop commitment. This brings an average 10 percent discount. However, the workshop commitment also has disadvantages: Sometimes car insurance the journey to the insurance company’s partner workshops is longer, and waiting times are longer. Manufacturers also sometimes refuse to make warranty or goodwill claims if independent workshops have already worked on the car.
Tip 6: These four things should be included
You should not make any compromises on the following features: You should also be insured in the event of gross negligence, damage caused by martens and their consequences – and not just in the event of accidents 7 Tips you can save on car insurance involving wild animals, but also with cows and sheep (“extended wild animal damage”). In addition, the coverage amount for liability should be 100 million euros. These minimum criteria make the insurance only slightly more expensive and are extremely useful.
Once you have briefly thought about these questions, all you need is your vehicle registration document and your driver’s license – and you can get started. We recommend choosing a new insurer first. Don’t cancel your old policy until you have your new insurance certificate.
Tip 7: Always compare twice
Every provider calculates slightly differently. That’s why there isn’t one provider that is the cheapest for everyone. It always depends on the case. So we’ve tested again for you how best to proceed.

But it did particularly well in our test: in more than one in three cases it was able car insurance to undercut 7 Tips you can really save on car insurancethe offer from one of the two portals. That’s why you should request a second offer there.
